Description

Sodium fluoride is an inorganic chemical compound. A colorless solid, it is a source of the fluoride ion in diverse applications. Sodium fluoride is less expensive and less hygroscopic than the related salt potassium fluoride.

Indication

To prevent cavities.

Mechanism of Action

Fluorides interfere with electron transport and calcium metabolism. Calcium is essential for maintaining cardiac membrane potentials and in regulating coagulation.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption
Absorbed readily and almost completely from the GI tract. A large amount of an oral dose may be absorbed in the stomach; rate of absorption may depend on the gastric pH.
Distribution
Stored in bones and developing teeth after absorption. Fluoride is distributed into sweat, tears, hair, and saliva. Fluoride crosses the placental barrier and is distributed into breast milk.
Metabolism
Not metabolized.
Elimination
